First, I want to talk about
Eating White by Nicolson. At first, the author looks back on the lunch that he
had with his mother, then he talks about his mother likes white food. Nicolson
was born in England; the Cheshire cheese there is very different from Los
Angeles. So, I believe that different culture have different eating style. And,
because the author’s mother was a catholic, he always thinks about the
relationship between these. Why his mother loves white food? He says “white
food meant a white soul” in his article. (p.4) So, maybe the religion will
influence one’s eating behavior. Roy Ahn’s article “Home Run-My Journey Back to
Korean Food” talks about that the eating Korean food is a way to show one’s Korean
identity. He tells a story for us, once he and his wife went to Korean food
restaurant, and he order a wrong dish. And author began to think about is he
losing his ethnic bearings? Then he looks back on his growing experience. He move
from Korea to the U.S.A. when he was 4, so he growing up as an American. When
he was young, his parents’ house has two refrigerators, one is to store Korean food, one is
to store American food. But, in author’s home, there is only one refrigerator. He
wants combine those two food style. According to Ahn’s article, the food shows
one’s identity. All in all, compare these two articles, food is a very
important thing in one’s life. And, food is always connecting with their
mother.
